ARTE - 90 Miles (AI)
Havana, 1959. Fidel Castro, iconic figure of the Cuban revolution, addresses the crowd. This photo is not an archive; it was created from scratch by artificial intelligence... Presented by Sonia Devillers, the magazine that Analyzes the images of our time. In April 2023, the famous photojournalist and former member of the Magnum agency Michael Christopher Brown published a new kind of project on Instagram. 90 Miles is a series of several hundred images generated from the artificial intelligence software Midjourney, intended to tell the trying life of Cubans from the 1950s. Born twenty years after the Cuban revolution, Michael Christopher Brown was never able to document these events himself. The photographer talks for us about the making of these photos which question the future of photojournalism and the authenticity of the images. For Arno Gisinger, photographer and historian, image manipulation is a much older phenomenon than the arrival of AI.
